Find a Tradesman

Conversion Project

A conversion project in your home can do incredible things to help transform your home into everything you’ve ever wanted. Some people set out to small conversion projects one area of the home at a time, while others prefer to tear it all down to the studs and start over.

Whatever the case may be, taking on a conversion project for your home is no easy task. It requires quite a few things specific to this type of home construction. The great thing about conversion projects on your home is that in doing them, you’re increasing the value of your home. Whether you’re looking to knock out a few walls and open up a room, or turning your garage into a guest house, it’s incredibly important to be certain you hire the right conversion specialist to do the work on your home.

Here at ClickATrades, we spoke to some of the conversion specialists that come highly recommended on our site, to find out the things you want to be sure you’re looking at and taking into consideration before you hire the conversion specialist for your home.

  • Have they done similar conversion work?
  • What is their experience? Do they have the proper accreditations?
  • Get thorough quotes and get at least three of them.
If you’re keeping these points in mind while you’re doing your search, then you’re already ahead of the game. Below, we’re going to discuss each of these in a little more detail.

Conversion work on your home is not like replacing a kitchen counter. They are complex jobs with many different, multi-faceted processes to complete the conversion work. Every type of conversion job is completely different from the previous one. And even more so, every room conversion is different than the room before, or after, it.

In your search for the perfect tradesman to do your conversion work in your home, it’s smart to look at ones that have done the same kind of work you’re looking for. If you’re looking to turn an unused garage into a new, high-end screening room, then be sure to be only meeting with tradesmen who actually have experience with building and installing screening rooms in homes. You don’t want to hire someone who’s never done that kind of work before to handle a precision job such as that for your home.

Take their previous work into consideration from the moment you ask them for a quote until the entire job is finished in your home. Ask to see their portfolio of previous work as well, or to speak with some of their previous customers. Tradesmen who know the quality of their work will have no issues putting you in contact with some of their previous customers.

Their experience is similar to what we touched on above. Once you’ve established that they’re able to do the work you need for the conversion project in your home, you need to then start looking at their accreditations.

Do they belong to professional organisations that others at the top of the industry do, or are they just hobbyist that have a knack for doing solid work? Whatever the case may be, be sure that they belong to some organisations such as; the Federation of Master Builders, Guild of Builders and Contractors, Guild of Master Craftsmen, National Federation of Builders, or the FairTrades Association.

Membership in these types of organisations ensures that the builder you’re hiring has a history of doing quality work for their customers.

ClickATrades recommends, as always, that no matter the job you’re looking to have done on your home, that you always get a minimum of three different and fully detailed quotes. Doing this ensures you have as much information as possible about every tradesman you’re considering for the work.

In the case of conversion work, be certain that each of the quotes you get is from a tradesman that has a great deal of experience doing the same kind of conversion work that you’re looking for. Once you have the quotes have a look and see what things they’re charging, or not charging for. Will they remove all of the demo materials? Are they charging you for materials they’re not going to use? Will they be subcontracting any part of the work out to anyone else?

These are just a few of the major things to be sure you’re looking for when you are considering a tradesman to do the conversion work on your home.
